Round-Up: Lancashire rue poor weather as title hopes fade

By David Jesudason

The difficulty of winning the Championship in the North West may prove to be the deciding factor in the Championship as rain again hampered Lancashire's First Division title hopes. The Red Rose county's chances of forcing a positive result against Middlesex at Old Trafford are slim with one day's play left.

A draw was also inevitable across the Pennines with Kent and Yorkshire spending nearly all of the day in the pavilion at Headingley.

Hampshire, following on, were bowled out for 286 at home to Warwickshire, leaving the visitors needing 121 runs off a minimum of 25 overs. The South African Neil Carter and Ian Westwood scored the winning runs.

In the Second Division, hosts Derbyshire overtook Gloucestershire's first-innings score with the stylish Australian Michael di Venuto scoring a patient, by his standards, 104 off 223 balls.

Leicestershire emerged victorious against Worcestershire at Grace Road. The hosts declared on 101 for 2 in their first innings with Worcestershire forfeiting their second innings, which left Leicestershire requiring 356 to win.

At Arundel, England's women beat India by five wickets in the third one-day international. Charlotte Edwards, the captain top-scored with 47 as England, batting second after inserting India, won in the last over.
