Round-up: Wells defies the gales with century to put wind up Surrey

Despite the difficulties of playing in gale-force winds – strong enough at one point to dislodge a boundary board and send it careering towards the middle – Luke Wells scored his second century of the season against Surrey at Horsham to empower an impressive recovery by Sussex.

The home side had crashed to 87 for 6 on the second day in reply to Surrey's 124 all out but Wells and Naved Arif put on 185 for the seventh wicket before the latter was caught at slip by Gareth Batty off Murali Kartik. Monty Panesar (31) and James Anyon shared an unlikely partnership of 80 for the last wicket with Anyon finishing 64 not out.

On the final day at Lord's, Somerset were indebted to Nick Compton for sparing them defeat against Middlesex, denying the home side a win that would have put them second in the First Division table. Compton batted for more than four and a half hours after Middlesex, who had declared at their overnight total of 364 for 3, removed both Somerset openers in the first three overs.

Only 12.5 overs were possible at Trent Bridge, where Lancashire claimed a third batting point against Nottinghamshire as Kyle Hogg and Simon Kerrigan shared a partnership of 70 for the last wicket.

A washout on the final day at Chester-le-Street denied Warwickshire the chance to put pressure on Nottinghamshire and robbed bottom-of-the-table Durham of a potential first win.
