Australia stamped their authority on the first Test with South Africa by taking three early wickets in the hosts' second innings at Newlands after Matthew Hayden (94), Ricky Ponting (74) and Andrew Symonds (55) all made half-centuries.

South Africa took their final seven wickets for 94 runs to limit them to 308 all out and a first-innings lead of 103. However, the dismissals of A B de Villiers, Herschelle Gibbs and the captain, Graeme Smith, left the hosts 70 for 3 at the close, trailing by 33 runs.

Australia resumed on 63 for 1 and enjoyed the better of the opening session, although they did have luck on their side. Ponting had a thick edge fly over the slips and an edge from Hayden, off the paceman Makhaya Ntini, fell short of Smith.

The Australia captain was eventually caught off Jacques Kallis and lunch was immediately called with Australia 175 for 2.

South Africa fought their way back during the afternoon session by taking four wickets, with Hayden the first to fall off Ntini. Michael Hussey (6) and Damien Martyn (22) fell soon after - both caught behind by Mark Boucher - and Kallis had Adam Gilchrist caught by Smith for 12 before tea.

Symonds was looking impressive, unbeaten on 41 off 34 balls at tea, and he then reached his second Test half-century with a knock that included four sixes. But he was the first wicket to fall in the final session, caught by Andre Nel off Nicky Boje, and his dismissal sparked the beginning of the end for Australia as their last four wickets fell for just 14 runs.

The Proteas' top-order batsmen failed to continue that momentum, with Lee removing both De Villiers (7) and Gibbs (0) in the fifth over. Smith was trapped lbw by Shane Warne for 16.
