Jacques Kallis hit 88 not out and took three wickets to lead South Africa to a 164-run win over Pakistan in the first of five one-day internationals yesterday.

Kallis and Mark Boucher put on 128 runs after Graeme Smith and A.B. de Villiers had an opening stand of 140 for South Africa to reach 392-6 - the seventh-highest ever total in one-day cricket.

Kallis then took 3-34 off five overs as Pakistan was bowled out for 228 in the 47th over.

"Hopefully we can carry on playing the cricket we have been playing and pleasing the crowds," Kallis said. "It's been superb."

Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and sent South Africa into bat at Centurion Park.

Smith and De Villiers attacked from the outset and had totaled 140 inside 19 overs when Smith was stumped by Kamran Akmal off the bowling of Mohammad Hafeez.

Three balls later, Loots Bosman was out in an identical dismissal for 4. De Villiers was then caught by Rana Naved-ul-Hasan off legspinner Shahid Afridi to leave South Africa on 267-3.

De Villiers hit two sixes and eight fours in his 67, while Smith had 15 fours for 72 from 47 balls

Ashwell Prince hit 39 from 48 balls before being caught by Abdul Razzaq off Afridi.

Kallis and Boucher put on their stand in just 10. 2 overs until Boucher was caught by Inzamam off Naved-ul-Hasan's bowling. Boucher hit four sixes and nine fours to score 78 in just 38 balls.

South Africa reached its third highest one-day total and scored the most runs ever against Pakistan. England's 363-7 in 55 overs in 1992 in Nottingham, England, was Pakistan's previous worst result.

Naved-ul-San's figures of 2-92 off eight overs were the ninth worst of all time.

Pakistan lost Mohammad Hafeez when he was caught by Smith off Makhaya Ntini for 21 in the fourth over and lost wickets at regular intervals afterward. Mohammad Yousuf and Inzamam put on 49 runs for the sixth wicket before Yousuf was caught by Smith off Andre Nel for 39.

Inzamam fell three balls later, caught by substitute Andrew Hall off Kallis for 15.

Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Sami had a ninth-wicket partnership of 73 off 122 balls. Sami was caught by Boucher off Robin Peterson for 46, while Malik was unbeaten on 52.

Smith took the final wicket when Asif was caught by Prince for 2.

Shabbir Ahmad is heading home after injuring his groin in Pakistan's Twenty20 match against South Africa on Friday and will be out for three weeks.
