Trescothick smashes back into form

Marcus Trescothick shone with 158 as Somerset outclassed Kent in the C&G Trophy at Canterbury, winning a match decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method by 112 runs.

The Kent captain Robert Key's decision to put Somerset in backfired as Trescothick hit prime form. The England opener, playing his first competitive limited-overs match since his return from the tour of India in February, scored with ease alongside Matthew Wood.

Key used six bowlers in the first 17 overs, none of whom could make an impression, and Trescothick reached three figures from 103 balls with a scorching square drive for his 15th boundary. He fell lbw to Martin Saggers after 135 balls, 20 boundaries and three sixes.

Somerset were then 292 for 3 and some lusty hitting from James Hildreth took him to 32 and the final score to 338 for 5.

Kent lost their first two wickets in six overs with only 30 on the board. Andrew Caddick claimed the first, trapping Darren Stevens lbw for 14. Three overs and five runs later Martin van Jaarsveld's off- stump was flattened by his fellow South African Charl Willoughby and the next three Kent wickets fell in six balls on 51.

Caddick bowled Neil Dexter and Mathew Walker and Key edged Willoughby before Kent staged a mini-recovery with Joe Denly and James Tredwell putting on an unbroken 42 for the sixth wicket. The hosts had progressed to 93 for 5 from 26.2 overs when the rain set in - leaving Somerset the comfortable winners.
