Marcus Trescothick made his return to competitive cricket yesterday, only to find his thunder stolen by Craig Spearman.

Trescothick who withdrew from England's tour of India with a virus, although the reason was originally given as personal problems played for Somerset against Gloucestershire on the County Championship's first day. He let two edges from Spearman who made 109 through his fingers as he stood at first slip. Richard Johnson was the unlucky bowler.

Trescothick partly redeemed himself by catching Matt Windows off Andy Caddick for 20 on a rain-interrupted day that saw the hosts close on 262 for 4.
