Essex players Danish Kaneria and Mervyn Westfield have been arrested in an ongoing investigation into betting irregularities.

Pakistan leg-spinner Kaneria and pace bowler Westfield were questioned by officers before being released on police bail until September. An unnamed Essex Police spokesman said that "two men from Chelmsford have been arrested in connection with a police investigation into first-class domestic cricket match irregularities."

The force said the men were "arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud" after receiving allegations about two Essex players.

These relate to spot-fixing – wherey money is bet on individual details in a match – and is believed to be related to a Pro40 game against Durham last September.
