Yorkshire 307 Surrey 87-3: Rashid posts career best to aid Yorkshire's title bid
Yorkshire's relief that Adil Rashid will not, after all, be required by England's Under-19s next month was compounded when the precociously talented all-rounder hit a career-best unbeaten 91 to help his side gain potentially vital bonus points on another rain-disrupted day.
The 19-year-old leg spinner would have missed three Championship matches had he been picked to face Pakistan but the England and Wales Cricket Board sensibly decided to leave him out of the squad named at the weekend, accepting Yorkshire's joint leading wicket-taker - picked for England Lions against India - had rendered a return to junior level pointless.
Rashid's innings of 11 boundaries, spanning three days, may prove important to his side's title quest in effectively gaining three batting points. Yorkshire's score advanced from 124-5 to 307 while he was at the crease, propelled by partnerships of 49 with Darren Gough for the ninth wicket and 55 with Deon Kruis for the last, on a pitch giving help to the bowlers.
Gough then made inroads into Surrey's batting, dismissing Scott Newman and Jonathan Batty in his first two overs before finding a beauty to have Mark Butcher caught behind. Scott Walters and Mark Ramprakash then added 47 in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand over what remained of a day limited to 60 overs.
* Yorkshire have released batsman Matthew Wood from his contract after 11 seasons.
