Bradley Wiggins' final race for Team Sky ends in disappointment with 18th at Paris-Roubaix
Tour de France winner comes up short in his final race for Team Sky, finishing 18th at Paris-Roubaix
Sir Bradley Wiggins' Team Sky career ended in disappointment as he could only finish 18th in the chasing pack at Paris-Roubaix.
After a thrillingly close race marred by a near-disaster at a level crossing, John Degenkolb won the sprint inside Roubaix velodrome to add a second monument this spring, after Milan San-Remo in March.
Wiggins had earmarked this race, his last as a Sky rider, as one of his final goals as a road cyclist before he joins Team Wiggins to focus on the track in the build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympics.

But although he rode strongly, he was unable to follow the decisive move and could not improve upon his ninth place finish from last year.
Degenkolb, the German sprinter, instead enhanced his reputation with an easy victory in the sprint, leaving Greg van Avermaet, the Belgian rider who has a reputation for near misses, crying in the middle of the track.
Wiggins, the Tour de France winner, Olympic and World time-trial champion attempted a move 20 miles from the finish, but he was soon caught by the pursuers.
