Steve Douce, the Caterham professional with Saracen Cycles, is a strong favourite on Sunday for the senior championship, a title he has won six times. In last season's senior championship at Harlow, he finished fourth, the first time he had been outside the medal positions in 10 years. This year, however, he has not been beaten by domestic opposition and his emphatic win in the London championships earlier this month proves his form. One rider, who may spoil the picture, is the amateur Roger Hammond, Britain's world junior champion, who makes his senior debut. He lays down his challenge after an impressive win in last Sunday's Macclesfield Wheelers 14-mile race, where the 19-year-old lapped most of the field.

How to get there: Aldersley Stadium is 1 1/2 miles north-west of Wolverhampton, signposted from the A449 Stafford road and A41 through Tettenhall. Admission is free and refreshments are available. The women race first at 10.30am; National Championship races: junior 12.15pm, senior 2pm.
