An afternoon of winning favourites at Carlisle yesterday saw the Tote Jackpot won for the first time in nearly a fortnight. Although the meagre return will have disappointed some it still paid more than a starting- price accumulator.

"The pool built up to pounds 418,960, but with five winning favourites and the other winner a second favourite there were 1,056.89 winning units," the Tote's spokesman, Geoffrey Webster, said. "The dividend was pounds 281.40, which compares to the starting-price equivalent of pounds 154.35."

The day's pool started with a carry-over of pounds 194,000 as the jackpot had not been won since the Lingfield card on 6 January.
