Manchester United's players weren't exactly at the races when they went down 1-0 to Juventus in Turin last week. But even so, against a Juventus which, despite missing Didier Deschamps and Alessandro del Piero, dominated the game, United did not look the European Cup winners elect that recent results had suggested.

With no unbeaten sides going into Wednesday's quarter final draw, the competition looks open, with the exception of Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen who should provide two of the big six with direct access to the semi-finals.

Paris Saint-Germain, Parma and PSV Eindhoven are entitled to feel aggrieved that, because Monaco made heavy weather of winning weak Group F that, as a result, Group F runners up Bayer Leverkusen accompany them into the quarter finals.

It is reckless getting involved before Wednesday's draw but, at this stage, Dynamo Kiev, who, in racing parlance, weren't off a yard when going down 2-0 to Newcastle at St James's Park last week but still won Group (of death) C, are overpriced at 14-1 while Group A winners and defending champions Borussia Dortmund have as much chance as anyone yet are 9-1.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich must be respected but are priced accordingly.

Meanwhile, Manchester United ought to have few problems beating Aston Villa, who are without Dwight Yorke, in their Premiership game at Old Trafford tonight.

On Wednesday, Newcastle United, who drew 2-2 with Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday, should prove too strong for Derby in their Premiership game at St James's Park.
