England will have two clubs in next season's European Cup after Uefa, European football's governing body, last night approved a plan to increase the Champions' League from 16 to 24 teams. Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands will also enter an extra team.

The Republic of Ireland have added the Tranmere Rovers midfielder Liam O'Brien to their squad for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Macedonia in Dublin, after the loss of the injured Roy Keane.

David Holdsworth, the 27-year-old Watford defender, is set to join Sheffield United for pounds 300,000, with a further pounds 200,000 dependent on appearances.

East Fife have named Jim Bone, formerly in charge of St Mirren, as their new manager. He takes over from Steve Archibald, who was sacked last month.

The Norwich City winger Darren Eadie has pulled out of the England Under- 21 squad for Tuesday's encounter with Poland at Molineux with a hip injury.

Leicester City have placed their midfielder Garry Parker on the transfer list at his own request.
