Aston Villa are seeking planning permission to turn Villa Park into a 50,000 capacity stadium, with 10,250 more seats to be erected in the North Stand. The cost of the pounds 11.25m project would be financed by the club's imminent flotation on the Stock Market.

Zaire's World Cup qualifying match against Zambia, scheduled for Kinshasa, will be played in Zimbabwe because of the civil war at home. The African Group Three match, originally scheduled for Sunday, will instead be held on 9 April at the National Sports Stadium in the Zimbabwean capital of Harare.
