Garry Bannister, the Darlington midfielder, has been forced to retire at the age of 35 because of a neck injury sustained last season, when he helped the Quakers reach the Third Division play-offs.

Paul Moulden, the former Manchester City and Oldham striker, has joined Accrington Stanley, in the Unibond League.

Bradford, promoted last season to the First Division, have confirmed the signing of Gordon Cowans , the former England midfielder, on a free transfer from Sheffield United.

Tony Popovic, the 22-year-old Australian international who trained with Wolves in March, has joined the First Division club for their pre-season tour of Austria and Germany and will move from Sydney United permanently if he impresses during the four-match trip.

Gothenburg, the Swedish league leaders, have agreed to sell the international midfielder, Hakan Mild, to Real Sociedad. Mild, 25, will join the Spanish club after Gothenburg have played their qualifying rounds in the Champions' League and following final negotiations over his personal contract.
