Tim Flowers, the England goalkeeper, has signed a new five-year contract with Blackburn Rovers.

Barry Fry, the new owner and manager of Peterborough United, has signed two Walsall players: the 27-year-old former Crystal Palace midfielder Martyn O'Connor and the 24-year-old winger Scott Houghton, once of Tottenham. Fees for both players will be fixed by a transfer tribunal; they follow Zeke Rowe (free from Chelsea), Adrian Boothroyd (free from Mansfield) and Steve Welsh (fee to be decided from Partick) to Peterborough.

The Watford manager Kenny Jackett has made his first two signings by securing Sunderland goalkeeper Alec Chamberlain for pounds 40,000 and Steve Talboys on a free transfer from Wimbledon.

Wigan Athletic have paid a club record pounds 150,000 for the Doncaster Rovers striker Graeme Jones, the Yorkshire club's top scorer for the last two seasons.

Paul Durkin, the referee from Portland, Dorset, will take charge of the Littlewoods FA Charity Shield between Manchester United and Newcastle at Wembley on Sunday 11 August.

Bobby Robson, the new Barcelona coach, has signed the Portuguese international goalkeeper Vitor Baia from his former club, Porto, for pounds 5.5m after a deal to sign Germany's Andreas Kopke from Eintracht Frankfurt fell through. Kopke is now expected to join VfB Stuttgart.

The Portugese international defender Carlos Secretario said yesterday that he was moving from Porto to Real Madrid on a four-year contract for a fee of about pounds 1.3m.
