Coventry City. . . .1
A FOURTH away win in as many games this season kept unfancied Coventry in touch with the top of the Premier League.
Just as at Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, the ability to absorb pressure and then strike back on the break proved decisive for Coventry. Once again, the vital goal stemmed from a source that takes the long-ball game to its logical conclusion - the mighty boot of their goalkeeper, Steve Ogrizovic.
Robert Rosario headed on Ogrizovic's kick 10 minutes into the second half, Ian Marshall lost his footing when he would otherwise surely have cleared and Kevin Gallacher thumped his shot high into the net for his first goal of the season.
Oldham's pressure had been steady but shapeless. Their best chance came as early as 30 seconds when Gunnar Halle had a free header from Neil Pointon's cross but put a poor effort over the bar.
For all their territorial superiority, Oldham always looked vulnerable to Coventry's pace on the breakaway, particularly from John Williams, but his control failed to match his speed.
The introduction of Neil Adams in the second half gave Oldham's attack a little more purpose and Ogrizovic needed to produce the save of the match to deny Graeme Sharp after the substitute had set up the chance.
Coventry survived and another of their swift counter-punchers should have made it two in the last minute. Peter Ndlovu shot wide after taking the ball past Hallworth.
The closest the Coventry accent can get to the surname of the culprit seems to be 'unloved'.
That is what their side is and may remain. But they will not be unrated for much longer if they continue to collect points away from home with this efficiency.
