After Christmas the title race developed into a three-horse race between United, Arsenal and Chelsea. Chelsea faltered but the two remaining contenders became embroiled in a thrilling battle, which went to the final day when United clinched their fifth title in seven seasons with a 2-1 home win against Tottenham Hotspur.

United completed the Double with a 2-0 victory against Newcastle at Wembley. En route to the final they overturned a 1-0 deficit against Liverpool with two injury-time goals, beat Chelsea after a replay, and won a thrilling semi-final reply against Arsenal after that Ryan Giggs goal.

A rampant United amassed 20 goals in their League group before progressing to a quarter-final against Internazionale, where two Dwight Yorke headers helped them to a 3-1 aggregate victory. In the semi-final against Juventus, United faced elimination as they trailed by two goals. Their resilience again prevailed, however, and goals from Roy Keane, Yorke and Andy Cole sent United to their first European Cup final in 31 years.

WORTHINGTON CUP

The only cup to elude United's grasp. Alex Ferguson would point to his policy of fielding weakened sides in a competition that he had no realistic ambitions of winning.
