WHILE Rangers reached the Scottish Cup final, Marseille prepared for Wednesday's European Champions League tie against them by going top of the French league. Rudi Voller inflicted St Etienne's first defeat in 14 matches with the game's only goal, writes Ben Clissitt.

The former leaders, Monaco, suffered a 3-0 loss at Strasbourg and face a difficult match in the third round of the French cup, having been drawn against third-placed Paris St Germain.

The lead in the Dutch league also changed hands - twice. On Saturday, PSV took up the pace thanks to a 6-2 win over Twente Enschede. Yesterday Feyenoord resumed first place, beating Den Bosch 4-0. Dennis Bergkamp, who moves to Internazionale in the summer, scored two.

Barcelona and Real Madrid consolidated their first and second places in Spain with 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Logrones and Real Zaragoza respectively.

In Germany Bayern Munich lost 2-0 to Wattenscheid and are now ahead of Werder Bremen only on goals scored.
