Everton. . . . . . .1
SO FAR, Norwich are making a habit of saving their best until late and by maintaining the pattern yesterday they almost pulled off a victory that would have rivalled their opening day success at Highbury for audacity.
Until 10 minutes into the second half when Peter Beardsley gave Everton an overdue lead, the first Premier League leaders had not posed one serious threat to Neville Southall's goal. Everton, on the other hand, had rarely allowed five minutes to go by without testing Bryan Gunn's alertness.
Mark Ward should have headed them in front in the 18th minute, full-back Andy Hinchcliff had two rasping free kicks tipped over the bar and Gunn somehow managed to deny Robert Warzycha's close-range effort when a goal seemed certain.
Beardsley's successful volley, after Watson had headed Hinchcliff's free kick into his path, was the 11th clear opportunity to fall Everton's way.
Norwich's response was to play their most fluent football of the afternoon and within two minutes Southall was forced to make a genuine save for the first time when Newman's header created a chance for Ruel Fox.
Everton, taken aback, perhaps, at finding themselves under pressure, then allowed Fox to steal in unchecked at the far post to meet Mark Robins' cross from the left with a powerful header that Southall could not keep out.
Everton sent on Peter Beagrie and Mo Johnston in an effort to settle the contest but Robins, Norwich's pounds 800,000 bargain from Manchester United, was a whisker away from his fourth goal in three matches with a curling shot wide of Southall's left-hand post.
