THE FORMER Middlesbrough team-mates, Juninho and Emerson, were sent off as Atletico Madrid beat Tenerife 2-0 in a game in which 14 players were booked and three sent off with all of the action condensed into the last 20 minutes at the Vicente Calderon stadium.

Brazilian midfielder Juninho, a half-time substitute for Atletico, scored from the penalty spot after Felipe Minambres had brought down Kiko.

Then Tenerife lost two men in less than a minute when Brazilians Andre Luiz and Emerson were ejected for fouls. There was not a Brazilian left on the pitch two minutes later when Juninho was sent off for a dangerous tackle. Roberto Fresnedoso added a second goal for Atletico two minutes into injury time. Real Madrid beat leaders Real Zaragoza 4-3 in a thrilling match to return to the top of the Spanish league.

The German striker, Oliver Bierhoff, missed a penalty as Milan were beaten 1-0 away to newly promoted Cagliari yesterday. Tiziano de Patre's 19th- minute goal cost Milan the chance of joining Fiorentina at the top of Serie A.

Roma, who receive Leeds tomorrow in the first leg of their Uefa Cup-tie, scored a remarkable 2-1 win against the leaders, coming from behind with nine men. After Gabriel Batistuta put Fiorentina ahead, Roma's Luigi Di Biagio and Vincent Candela were sent off. And it was only in injury time when the Russian, Dmitry Alenichev, and Francesco Totti scored.
