Bobby Robson won his first trophy as Barcelona's coach when his new side took the Spanish Super Cup in Madrid last night. The former England manager saw his team lose 3-1 to Atletico Madrid in a highly competitive game, but they clung on to a 6-5 aggregate victory.

Jurgen Klinsmann scored an acrobatic goal as Bayern Munich enjoyed a 4-3 home win over Bayer Leverkusen and went to the top of the German Bundesliga. Sean Dundee scored a hat-trick in seven minutes in Karlsruhe's 4-0 thrashing of St Pauli. The Czech striker, Vladimir Smicer, snatched a last minute decider as Lens beat Montpellier to maintain their 100 per cent record at the top of the French League.

Russia's captain, Viktor Onopko, and Brazil's Cafu were sent off in a 2-2 friendly draw in Moscow yesterday. Yuri Nikiforov, from the penalty spot, and Vladislav Radimov scored for Russia, playing their first game under their new coach, Boris Ignatiev. Donizete and Ronaldo, with a late equaliser, were on target for Brazil.
