The daughter of Petula Clark, the singer, was one of 44 official World Cup interpreters on duty at New Jersey's Giants Stadium for yesterday's quarter-final between Bulgaria and Germany. Also included among their ranks was a language specialist from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and two French nuns with a passion for football. All unpaid volunteers, the languages they deal with include Arabic and Azerbaijani. The youngest was a 16-year-old high school student, who served as one of six Arabic translators for each match held at the stadium during the tournament.
