Arsenal breathed life back into their Champions League campaign by beating Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had endured a terrible start in Europe, losing both their opening games to opposition they were tipped to overcome.

Arsene Wenger’s men were left with the daunting task of taking something from two consecutive games against the Bundesliga champions but, on Tuesday night, they took three points at the first attempt.

The match began with a protest from the away supporters against the fixture’s minimum £64 ticket price. Hundreds of Bayern fans boycotted the first five minutes, choosing instead to wait in the gangways while banners stood in their place, reading “£64 a ticket, but without fans football is nothing”.

It was substitute Olivier Giroud who broke a deadlock, bundling home after Manuel Neuer’s error with just under a quarter of an hour to go.

Mesut Ozil doubled the home side’s lead just before time with an effort that Neuer had appeared to keep out, only for the fifth official to rule that it had crossed the line.
