Bayern win first game in four and celebrate with trip to the Oktoberfest

Bayern Munich were planning to celebrate their first win in four games by attending the Munich Beer Festival.

The Bavarians brushed aside Bochum 4-1 on Saturday, giving them some comfort after one point in three Champions' League games had put their European campaign in danger. Giovane Elber and Claudio Pizarro scored two goals apiece to get their Bundesliga challenge on course following last weekend's defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said: "The team kept the cool and concentrated very hard. Today, the board and the squad are off to the Oktoberfest together. We'll have a bit of a celebration."

Werder Bremen lost ground on Bayern when they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Hansa Rostock yesterday.

Benjani Mwaruwari, the Zimbabwean making waves in France, struck again yesterday to give Auxerre a 1-1 draw at home against Monaco that keeps them top of the table. The 24-year-old striker rose blasted the ball just under the bar from a free-kick by Khalilou Fadiga.

But Auxerre, still tired from their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday, allowed Monaco to come back, and in the 68th minute Shabani Nonda headed home. Auxerre are on 21 points, one clear of promoted Nice who had provisionally claimed joint top place with a 2-0 win over Bastia on Saturday.

Greece's league games were halted for a second week yesterday following the closure of a subscription TV channel and the government's refusal to replace part of the lost revenues.

Games may resume on 26 October if league organisers do not decide to extend the strike.
