Benfica v Chelsea, Europa League Final: John Terry ruled out of final - but will he pick up the trophy?

The club captain has been ruled out of tonight's final against Benfica

Chelsea captain John Terry is set to miss tonight's Europa League final against Benfica according to reports emerging from Amsterdam.

The defender was stretchered off in the Blues' match against Aston Villa on Saturday and despite travelling with the squad to the Netherlands, it is understood he will take no part in the actual match at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Attention will now turn to whether he will lift the trophy should Chelsea triumph over their Portuguese opponents.

The captain, who missed last year's Champions League final, memorably donned his kit after that match in Munich and lifted the famous cup alongside Frank Lampard.

The former England captain came in for much ridicule after that episode, although his role as club captain and as a driving force throughout Chelsea's journey to the final seemed fair reasons for his involvement in those celebrations.

Whether he decides to lift the trophy this time around has not been decided according to Frank Lampard, who will captain the Chelsea side in Terry's absence.

"Before the game I don't think it's something to talk about," Lampard said.

"I don't like to tempt fate. I haven't had a conversation with anyone.

"I don't think you should do. We will see. We win together so it doesn't matter who picks it up because they will be one of the staff and we're all the same."
