It’s a big game...

Nicolas Otamendi. Manchester City’s £32 million capture has had a torrid start to his Etihad career – losing in all three of his appearances. Two defeats in as many Premier League matches has cast some doubt over City’s defensive capabilities. The Argentine defender must rally the troops in Germany to kick-start his sides’ Champions League campaign with three points and a clean sheet top of Otamendi’s wish-list.

Best stat...

1: In the 1979 Uefa Cup, Borussia Monchengladbach became the first German side to knock Manchester City out of a European tournament – only one German side have managed it since (Hamburg, 2008-09 Uefa Cup last eight).

Remember when...

Sergio Aguero’s stunning hat-trick kept Manchester City’s Champions League dream alive last season? City’s late comeback to beat Bayern Munich unfortunately only prolonged the inevitable and Barcelona knocked them out in the first knockout round.

Player to watch…

Attention will be on Manchester City’s record purchase Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian has scored in three successive games for Manuel Pellegrini’s side but will be looking to justify his own price tag by scoring on a ground which he failed to do so with Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg.

Raheem Sterling will also be hopeful of netting his first Champions League goal for his new club. The England  winger has been in great form so far this season, scoring twice. But like his Belgian team-mate, Sterling will be judged on his performances in Europe.

Past three-meetings…

Manchester City 1 (Channon) Borussia Monchengladbach 1 (Lienen), UEFA Cup QF First Leg, March 1979.
