Arsenal v Barcelona, 2011, Champions League R16

Having been blown away by Lionel Messi’s four goals the previous season Arsenal travelled to Catalonia in hope after two late goals from Robin van Persie and Andrei Arshavin gave them a 2-1 first-leg lead. With Lionel Messi’s goal cancelled out by a Sergio Busquets own goal they still led as the hour approached. However, Van Persie, already booked, was then dismissed for taking a shot after the whistle had blown for offside.

Van Persie claimed he did not hear the whistle and the decision so incensed Arsene Wenger he later served a Uefa ban for his reaction to the referee. Barcelona, already dominant, made the extra man count with Xavi and, from the spot, Messi again, scoring to give them a 4-3 aggregate win.

Chelsea v Paris St Germain, 2015, Champions League R16

Chelsea’s exit was a traumatic experience. A small group of fans disgraced the club prior to the first leg when they racially abused a black Parisian on the metro, Chelsea then failed to beat a ten-man PSG in the Stamford Bridge return.

With the first-leg a 1-1 draw PSG looked like going out even before Gary Cahill scored with nine minutes left, Zlatan Ibrahimovic having been controversially dismissed after half-an-hour. However, former Chelsea player David Luiz forced extra-time with a late leveller and though Eden Hazard restored Chelsea’s lead Thiago Silva headed in to give PSG victory on away goals.

Manchester City v Dynamo Kiev, 2011, Europa League R16

In sub-zero temperatures Kiev took what proved an adequate 2-0 lead in Ukraine, Andriy Shevchenko, in his swansong spell at the club, and Oleh Gusev scoring. However, the match is best remembered for Mario Balotelli having to be substituted after apparently suffering an allergic reaction to the grass in the Olympic Stadium.

He was late out for the second half and had to be replaced before the hour.

It did not get better for the enigmatic Italian in the second leg as he was sent off after 36 minutes. Although Aleksandar Kolarov then halved the deficit three minutes later ten-man City were unable to draw level.
