Champions' League round-up: Real Madrid left in ruins by Roma triumph

For the fourth year in a row Real Madrid, the most decorated club in the competition's history, went out of the Champions League at the first knockout stage, beaten 2-1 by Roma at the Bernabeu to exit 4-2 on aggregate.

The Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Taddei took advantage of a static Real defence to head a crucial away goal with 17 minutes remaining. Raul equalised two minutes later after Robinho sent him through to score his 61st Champions League goal, but by then Real were already down to 10 men following Pepe's dismissal. Roma made sure of their place in the last eight in the final minute when substitute Mirko Vucinic beat Iker Casillas to Christian Panucci's cross.

Schalke had their 21-year-old goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, to thank for victory over Porto in Estadio do Dragao. After the Portuguese side's Italian striker Lisandro Lopez had levelled the aggregate score four minutes from time, Neuer, who had been outstanding in normal time, saved twice in the penalty shoot-out, which the Germans won 4-1. "The way we lost was cruel," said Porto's coach, Jesualdo Ferreira.
