Manchester City face Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night knowing that even a win might not guarantee them a place in the last 16.
Manuel Pellegrini's side currently sit in third place in Group E, level on points with Roma and CSKA Moscow.
They will have to win their match against Roma and hope CSKA do not defeat Bayern Munich in order for them to progress from the group.
City can also advance to the next round with a score draw, provided the Russian champions loose.
City are looking to reach the latter stages of the Champions League for the second successive season, but they will be without Sergio Aguero due to injury and Yaya Toure is suspended. Captain Vincent Kompany could return to the squad following a brief spell on the sidelines injured.
