Chelsea: Man-for-man marking

Petr Cech

Mostly a calm and assured presence in the Chelsea goal. Made an acrobatic save to tip Oscar Cardozo's long-range shot over the bar but was caught out for the goal. 6/10

Branislav Ivanovic

Kept busy in the first half with Benfica's primary attacks down the left-wing, and while he did concede a couple of needless free-kicks, stood up to most of the challenges. 6

David Luiz

Caught in possession a couple of times, but generally a solid night's work in the middle of the defence up until the Benfica goal, when he lost Javi Garcia, who headed in. 6

John Terry

Did all he needed to do in dogged and determined fashion. How his team must have wished he was still on the pitch when Benfica's late goal went in. 6

Ashley Cole

His surging run won the penalty, and Benfica just could not cope with him when he bombed forward. Settled into a stricter defensive role as the game progressed. 7

Frank Lampard

Drove in the penalty with his typical clinical touch, and his experience showed in his tidiness in possession, and awareness. 7

John Obi Mikel

Stuck to his job diligently in breaking up play for the first 70 minutes, but noticeably struggled when Benfica turned up the pressure in the final stages of the game. 6

Sensing Benfica were over-committed in attack, the long-legged Brazilian always looked to quickly start a counter-attack. Agonising miss early in the second half with the goal at his mercy. 6

Juan Mata

A far improved performance from the first-leg – a constant threat for the Benfica defence. Unlucky not to find the target on a couple of occasions after making some intelligent runs in behind the defence. 7

Salomon Kalou

The revitalised Ivorian troubled Benfica all evening with his pace. However, didn't always make the best decision in front of goal when the opportunity arose. 5

Fernando Torres

Like Kalou, certainly playing with a new air of confidence at the moment. While he did not have many chances, worked hard for his team. 6

Best off bench

Raul Meireles (Mata, 79 min): Fantastic individual goal to confirm Chelsea's place in the semi-finals with a fine run and powerful shot. 6

Benfica star man: Pablo Aimar

Was the instigator behind every meaningful Benfica attack with quick, probing passes. 7
