Real Madrid needed a late penalty to beat a brave Cordoba side 2-1 in their La Liga clash on Saturday, but the game was all the more memorable due to a moment of madness from Cristiano Ronaldo as he was sent-off for striking out at another player.

Gareth Bale stepped up and slotted home the spot-kick due to Ronaldo’s dismissal in the 83rd minute, when the Ballon d’Or winner appeared to both kick and punch Cordoba defender Edimar in a showing of frustration.

Ronaldo was given his marching orders, but when Bale’s free-kick was handled by Frede Cartabia in the area, referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez awarded a penalty that the Welshman duly converted.

Perhaps still fuming from his dismissal, Ronaldo allowed his arrogance to get the best of him as he brushed the Club World Championship winners’ badge on his chest as he made his way towards the tunnel amid a chorus of boos from the home fans.

Cordoba had gone ahead thanks to Nabil Ghilas’ penalty in the third minute, and the home side remained ahead until striker Karim Benzema levelled the scores midway through the first half.

Real continued to knock at the door, but were unable to find a crucial second and Ronaldo’s furious reaction was an example of the European Champions’ mentality as the match wore on.

The win sees Real remain top of La Liga with 48 points, four clear of rivals Barcelona who also play on Saturday night.
