David Moyes suffered the first defeat of his Real Sociedad tenure after his team was beaten 4-0 by Villarreal.

The former Manchester United and Everton manager fell to his first defeat in Spain, having won one and drawn two of his other three matches in charge.

The game had been an even contest for the first hour, with the two sides locked at 0-0.

But Sociedad conceded all four in the final half hour, with an own goal from Enaut Zubikarai opening the scoring, Denis Cheryshev on target and Moi Gomez scoring twice in the final 10 minutes.

Villarreal are up to sixth in La Liga and Real Sociedad in 14th.

Villarreall, of course, are the team that denied Moyes' Everton a Champions League spot in 2005 when Pierluigi Collina wrongly chalked off a Duncan Ferguson goal.

Moyes' team next face a high stakes Basque derby with local rivals Athletic Bilbao.
