Del Piero's magic moment reels in Inter

By Thomas Keppell

Juventus cut the gap on the Serie A leaders Internazionale to four points after an Alessandro Del Piero free-kick gave them a 1-0 home win over Siena yesterday.

Inter drew 1-1 with Cagliari at San Siro on Saturday and second-placed Juve made sure they took advantage despite looking rusty after the three-week mid-season break in Italy.

Del Piero (pictured, far right) has lit up the Champions League this season with some memorable free-kicks and he produced another piece of magic just after 30 minutes when he found the bottom corner of the Siena net.

The 34-year-old had a couple of other half-chances for Juve but they were forced to cling on at the end with goalkeeper Alex Manninger defying his former Siena team-mates in the continued absence of Gianluigi Buffon.

Napoli moved up to fourth after Christian Maggio's tap-in 10 minutes from time sealed a laboured 1-0 home win over Catania.

The visitors, who had a goal ruled out because the referee had already blown for half-time, appealed for offside but Maggio's goal stood and made up for Marek Hamsik's missed penalty.

Fiorentina are a point further back after losing 2-1 at home to Lecce, who climb out of the bottom three thanks to their first win in 13 league games. Guillermo Giacomazzi and Jose Castillo both broke the Viola's offside flag to score either side of Felipe Melo's header for Fiorentina.

Genoa are on the same points as Fiorentina after winning 3-0 on Saturday against Torino, who slip into the drop zone.

In France, Lyons saw their lead at the top of Ligue 1 cut to two points after they drew 1-1 at home to Lorient, while Rennes won 1-0 against Grenoble.

Lyons made a flying start with Ederson putting them into the lead within the opening 10 minutes, but Fabrice Abriel restored parity shortly before half-time to deny the reigning champions.

The result means Lyons have now won just once in their past six games, a run which has allowed Rennes and Bordeaux to narrow the gap on them at the top of the table.

Rennes reduced their advantage to two points, and extended their unbeaten run to 18 games, thanks to Moussa Sow's sweetly struck second-half goal.

Marseilles moved up to fourth with a 2-0 win at Auxerre in a match that controversially went ahead despite atrocious conditions at the Stade l'Abbé-Deschamps.

Pape Diouf, the Marseilles president, was livid minutes before kick-off, unhappy that the game was going ahead despite a frozen pitch. Diouf was seen on television saying to the Auxerre president, Jean-Claude Hamel: "We can't play on this pitch – if you want the three points, I give them to you." However, Marseilles took the lead through one of the players he must have been most worried about, Mamadou Samassa, who passed a late fitness test on a knee injury to start, before Mathieu Valbuena added a late second.
