Europa League round-up: Elliot's long-range missile gets Birmingham off mark

Birmingham City came from behind last night to record a surprising 2-1 win at NK Maribor. With 30 minutes left in Slovenia Birmingham were losing but goals from Chris Burke and Wade Elliot gave them their first win of the group stage.

Dalibor Volas put the Slovenian champions ahead after half an hour, pouncing on Blues' keeper Colin Doyle's missed kick and finishing simply from close range. Chris Hughton's side fought back bravely in the second half, though. Burke received Marlon King's clever pass and cut in before finishing powerfully past Jasmin Handanovic.

With 10 minutes left, Elliot surprised Handanovic with a strike from distance which went past the goalkeeper at his near post, and the Championship side had an unlikely European victory.

Celtic drew their home match 1-1 with Udinese, in a match of two converted penalties, 85 minutes apart. Three minutes in, Gary Hooper was fouled and Ki Sung-yueng scored.

The hosts were just two minutes away from what would have been a very impressive win against the side who are joint top of Serie A with Juventus, but Hooper was involved in another penalty-box incident, which cost them. The English striker fouled Neuton, and Almen Abdi scored from the spot.
