Manchester United outcast Henrikh Mkhitaryan ‘has to do more’ if he is to force a place in the team, according to manager Jose Mourinho.

The former Borussia Dortmund man, who signed for £26m in the summer, made his first appearance in a United shirt since September 10 when he replaced Marcus Rashford for the final half an hour of the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce on Thursday night.

It was only the fifth time Mkhitaryan has played for United since arriving at Old Trafford, with four of those occasions coming from the bench and the one game he did start he was removed after only 45 minutes.

The Armenian was sidelined for a couple of weeks with a thigh injury but has been left out of a number of matchday squads since, despite being picked in to travel with the side.

Mkhitaryan looked lively on his return to the United team, but Mourinho refused to get carried away with his performance and insisted he has to improve if he is to regularly compete for a place.

"He has to do more. It's as simple as that,” said Mourinho.

"We have big expectations at this club, lots of players for these positions.

"He has to play better than [Juan] Mata, [Jesse] Lingard, [Anthony] Martial – he has to play better than them. It's as simple as that.

"Every manager wants to win matches, every manager in the world wants to play the players that he thinks can help the team more, and I'm no different."
