Fernando Torres's ninth-minute opener wasn't enough to give Chelssea victory on Wednesday after John Chedjou's second-half volley meant the Blues will return to Stamford Bridge with a 1-1 scoreline and a precious away goal to defend.

The Spaniard looked lively early on as he made his first start since recovering from injury that kept him out for a month, while Andre Schurrler also started the match as he was preferred to Oscar, who was named on the bench. Jose Mourinho was soon repayed for his faith in Torres, with the striker brightening a week that has seen the Portuguese embroiled in controversy after comments he made regarding Samuel Eto'o's age were made public.

Despite a dominant first half, Galatasaray responded after a stern team-talk from former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, now in charge at the Turk Telecom Arena, and notched an equaliser when Chedjou lost his marker John Terry and volleyed in Wesley Sneijder's corner from close range.
