Despite scoring three goals, Liverpool’s strike force is currently a depleted one with Mario Balotelli injured and Fabio Borini absent from the matchday squad, meaning Rickie Lambert was left on his own to lead the line for 90 minutes.
While the England international put in another good shift as he begins to find some form this season, Lambert failed to get himself on the scoresheet as midfielders Adam Lallana, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson secured the victory.
What Liverpool would give to have a striker of the calibre of Luis Suarez available to them, with the summer departure of the Uruguayan a clear reason behind their difficult start. It won’t have helped matters then, that on-loan striker Iago Aspas – who failed to score a single Premier League goal last season – scored a four-minute hat-trick for Sevilla on Wednesday night.
The Spaniard struggled to settle at Anfield after his 2013 move, and was sent out on loan for the season to the La Liga club. Aspas started the Copa del Rey clash against second division side Sabadell, and netted three goals in four second-half minutes to help secure a 5-1 victory and an 11-2 aggregate score.
The 27-year-old’s credentials have been done a world of good given that he netted a hat-trick in the first leg against the same opposition, and Rodgers may be scrambling for the paperwork back at their Carrington base to check if there’s a recall option included.
One problem though is while Aspas has flourished in the Copa del Rey, he is yet to be given a start in La Liga, and has played a total of 79 minutes in six substitute appearances.
