Luis Suarez has accused the British media of making a “mountain out of a molehill” after video footage showed he did not attempt to bite Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis during Barcelona’s 2-1 victory in the Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday.

Suarez has also claimed that the press in the country he played in up until last summer should show him “some respect”.

The 28-year-old Uruguayan striker responded to the claims after social media users suggested Suarez had attempted to bite another player. The former Ajax and Liverpool star has been banned three times for biting during his playing career, and some viewers believed he had regressed to his old tricks during Tuesday’s gripping encounter.

Suarez was banned for seven league matches and fined by Ajax after biting PSV's Otman Bakkal on the neck, before earning a 10-game ban for sinking his teeth into Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with the Blues towards the end of the 2012-13 season.

Suarez scored twice against Manchester City

Having appeared to have turned a new leaf, Suarez has handed his most severe ban of his career when he was seen biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s 2014 World Cup group game. Suarez was subsequently banned for four months and heavily fined for his actions, which led to his £75m Liverpool exit in the summer and only saw him return to action in October last year.

But he put in his best performance in a Barcelona shirt to score a double and give the Catalan side the advantage heading back to the Nou Camp for the second leg, and he has spoken out over his treatment by the British media following the match which saw him momentarily clash with City defender Demichelis.

Speaking to Uruguayan radio station Sport890, Suarez said: “He [Demichelis] put his hand on my throat. “I do not understand why they [the English media] want to do this. They want to make trouble - a mountain out of a molehill.”

Suarez added that in his eyes, it was revenge for the two goals that he scored against England at the World Cup that contributed to the Three Lions’ early elimination from matters in Brazil – which came before Suarez had bitten Chiellini.

“They must be hurt after what I did to them in the World Cup but they forget that I played in England and they should show me some respect,” Suarez added.
