Roy Makaay scored an 89th-minute winner for Deportivo La Coruña last night that eliminated the four-time European champions Bayern Munich from the Champions' League.

The Spanish club won 2-1 in Group G after Makaay blasted a right-foot shot into the Bayern goal to settle matters.

The exit for Bayern, who won the Champions' League two seasons ago and lost the 1999 final to Manchester United, is the first time the Germans have been eliminated in the first phase of Europe's leading club competition.

Bayern desperately needed a win to have any hope of reaching the second group stage but the match got off to a slow start with the clubs cancelling one another out.

Ten minutes into the second half, however, Deportivo's Victor Sanchez stunned the visiting team when he scored a free-kick. Bayern responded in the 77th minute when Roque Santa Cruz scored to give the Germans some measure of hope.

However, in the 89th minute and with the rain pouring down on Deportivo's Riazor stadium, the Dutchman picked up a cross from the left and finished emphatically for his sixth goal in the Champions' League this season.

Deportivo are now two points ahead of Lens who last night beat Milan, the Italians have already qualified for the second phase. Daniel Moreira and John Utaka scored the Lens goals after Andriy Schevchenko had given Milan the lead. In the final group games, Deportivo visit Milan and Lens travel to Bayern knowing they have to win to have any hope of pipping Depor to second spot.

Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen were the two sides to ensure their places in the second phase last night.

In Newcastle's Group E Juventus beat Feyenoord 2-0 at home with Marco Di Vaio getting both goals to ensure their progress. Feyenoord are left to scrap it out for second spot with Newcastle and Dynamo Kiev. Leverkusen followed Manchester United out of Group F and into the next phase by beating Olympiakos 2-0 at home.

Barcelona are the only team with a 100 per cent record, after a Juan Riquelme strike gave Louis van Gaal's team a 1-0 win at Bruges to make it five wins out of five for the Spanish club.
