Manchester City cannot be eliminated from the Champions League tonight – after an injury-time equaliser for CSKA Moscow in the other group E game against Roma, which kicked off early.
That 1-1 result means that City could feasibly lose tonight against Bayern and still get through on five points with a win by three goals in their last game away to Roma – as long as the Bayern v CSKA result goes their way too.
Eliaquim Mangala and Bacary Sagna were the surprise picks for Manuel Pellegrini tonight. Martin Demichelis, the former Bayern defender, was expected to start in the centre of defence while Pablo Zabaleta trained as usual yesterday.
In his programme notes, Pellegrini said that his team were “already in the knockout phase of the competition”. He wrote: “We put pressure on ourselves to be successful and if we don’t make the last 16 it will be a disappointment
“It will not be easy. This evening we have Yaya Toure and Fernandinho suspended and injuries to other big players but as I have said many times we have a very talented group here and also we have the home crowd behind us – I am sure you will raise the roof – so we will see what happens.”

Bayern Munich: Neuer, Benatia, Boateng, Rafinha, Rode, Bernat, Höjbjerg, Alonso, Ribéry, Lewandowski, Robben.
