It’s a big game for....

Former Arsenal man Nicklas Bendtner. The striker scored the winning penalty in the German Super Cup against Bayern Munich but has not scored since his Bundesliga strike earned Wolfsburg a 1-1 draw away at Cologne in August. Bendtner came on as a second half substitute during his sides 1-0 over CSKA Moscow on Matchday one and will be desperate to get one over a Premier League side.

Best stat...

2: Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko is the only player to score in both meetings between the two sides.

Remember when...

Michael Owen sealed his only ever Manchester United hat-trick in a 3-1 victory at Wolfsburg in December 2009. The treble was Owen’s second on German soil after his famous performance in the World Cup qualifiers for England saw him grab three in a 5-1 win over Germany.

Player to watch…

A hat-trick for Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford will make him Manchester United’s highest ever European goalscorer. The England captain is just two short Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of 38. Meanwhile Rooney continues to inch towards Sir Bobby Charlton’s United goal record – he is 14 shy of Charlton’s 249.

Wolfsburg will have to be wary of United’s form man Anthony Martial. The Frenchman will make his second Champions League appearance of the season at Old Trafford. The 19-year old has scored three goals in three Premier League games but with the money that Louis van Gaal has spent, he will expecting a goal return in Europe.

Past three-meetings…

The two sides have only met on two occasions.

Manchester United 2 (Giggs, Carrick) Wolfsburg 1 (Dzeko), Champions League, September 2009.

Wolfsburg 1 (Dzeko) Manchester United 3 (Owen 3), Champions League, December 2009.
