James Mariner is a journalist who has been boring The Independent sports desk with mindless statistics since June 2007. Helping with various, wide-ranging desk duties (I made the tea once), supervising workies and the endless researching of panels, James has an unnatural love of all things football, and in particular the Europa League, being a Tottenham Hotspur supporter. He cites Brian Sears and Ledley King among his heroes and can even find something interesting in Burnley v Hull City. On a good day.

Patrice Evra's stunning goal gave Manchester United a glimmer of hope of reaching the Champions League semi-finals but ultimately Bayern Munich proved too much.

On the night, Evra gave the visitors their vital away goal just before the hour mark with a spectacular strike. The French defender met Antonio Valencia's cross perfectly and unleashed an unstoppable drive past Manuel Neuer.
From their though, United's night went downhill rapidly. Less than a minute after United's goal, Mario Mandzukic levelled with a close-range header from Franck Ribery's pass.
Wayne Rooney could have scored when put in by Danny Welbeck but the England star fluffed his shot and chance was gone.
Thomas Muller then swept home Arjen Robben's low cross and the Dutch winger made it three for Bayern and put the game beyond David Moyes' tiring side with superb solo run and strike, albeit with the aid of slight Nemanja Vidic deflection.
