A Spanish sculptor has created a new bust of Cristiano Ronado, and this one carries an uncanny likeness to the Real Madrid forward.

In March a bizarre bust by Emanuel Santos was unveiled at the newly named Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo in his native Madeira Islands which was roundly ridiculed. It was not the first – it followed a full statue of Ronaldo in Madeira which also carried very little resemblance to the man himself.

But artist Jose Antonio Navarro Arteaga has received praise for his impressively accurate interpretation, which has earned a place in Real Madrid's official museum.

He told Spanish daily El Mundo he spent less than £45,000 on the bust. “I used several photos of Cristiano to work from. What I wanted to reflect was his interior strength, when he was preparing to take a free kick or a corner.”

Artega is said to have been inspired to create the piece after his son saw the bust in the airport in Madeira and told his father he could do a better job.

Ronaldo did not attend the unveiling, but was represented by Madrid legend Emilio Butragueno.
