The 71-year-old,sacked by his home-city club Newcastle last month, coached Real's arch rivals Barcelona for a season in the late 1990s, winning the Cup-Winners' Cup and Spanish Cup and is considered a respected coach who could manage Real's group of big-name players.

Arsenal's chairman, Peter Hill-Wood, reiterated yesterday that his manager, Arsène Wenger, will sign a new contract and resist any advances from Real Madrid.
