Real Madrid have become the latest club to donate money in aid of the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean.

The Spanish giants will give €1m to projects in Spain which offer support to those arriving in the country having fled war-torn regions.

Real have followed the lead of competitors across the continent, with a growing number of clubs throwing their weight behind various refugee campaigns.

In a statement posted on their official website, the club said: "The president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, spoke by phone with the president of the government, Mariano Rajoy.

"The pair talked about this contribution and other measures that the club will put in place in order to collaborate with the care of refugees that arrive in Spain."

The club added: "Faithful to its commitment to charity, the club has taken this decision with the aim of supporting men, women and children who have been forced to leave their homes in order to flee from war and death.

Earlier this week, Bayern Munich announced they would be hosting a refugee 'training camp', which would offer food, language lessons and football equipment to those in need.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund invited a group of refugees to attend their Europa League fixture against Odd, and Celtic have pledged to donate all proceedings from a friendly against Dunfermline to charities battling the crisis.
