Spalletti resigns as Roma coach

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has resigned after just two games of the Serie A season.

Spalletti held talks with club president Rosella Sensi this morning before announcing his decision.

"I offered my resignation and the club has accepted it," said Spalletti to the Italian media.

The move comes after the Eternal City outfit's 3-1 home defeat against Juventus on Sunday which followed their 3-2 loss at Genoa.

Roma are currently in talks to appoint former Juventus and Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri as Spalletti's replacement.

Spalletti, who succeeded Luigi Del Neri in charge of the Giallorossi in 2005, was under fire after Roma started the season with back-to-back defeats.

The 50-year-old survived a dismal start to the 2008/09 campaign, but Roma's sixth-placed finish, which was not good to qualify for the Champions League, saw him go into the new season under pressure.

The former Udinese boss was under contract with Roma until June 2011.

Under Spalletti, Roma won two Coppa Italia titles (2007 and 2008) and an Italian Supercup (2008) as well as finishing runners-up three times in Serie A behind champions Inter Milan.

Spalletti was left frustrated at the club's failure to make any big-name signings in the summer.

Defenders Nicolas Burdisso, who arrived from Inter Milan, and Marco Motta, signed from Udinese, were the team's most significant acquisitions.
