St Pauli, the famous ‘cult’ football club based in Hamburg, have made headlines once again after announcing a new signing in a peculiar fashion.

The 2. Bundesliga side, known for their brown kit, unofficial skull and crossbones emblem and adoption of left-leaning politics, presented Marvin Ducksch to media on Wednesday morning.

However, Ewald Lienan, the club’s manager, could not make the unveiling – so, in his place, a unidentified man wore a mask of the 62-year-old coach.

Ducksch, a 22-year-old striker signed from Borussia Dortmund, looks rather nonplussed by the stunt in the photograph, despite saying that he is “looking forward to the challenge at St Pauli.”

After the image prompted questions from fans on social media regarding the whereabouts of Lienen, St Pauli confirmed that a mystery man in a mask had stood in for their manager and described it as “a one-off”.

The club later issued a reaction from Lienen to the signing; he said: “With Marvin we get an attacker who has good technique and a very good end product.”
