Video: Thiago Alcantara may be regretting turning down Manchester United after Pep Guardiola slaps him across the face
Midfielder felt Guardiola's wrath after he witnessed his side concede two goals in as many minutes in the 4-2 German Super Cup defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
When Thiago Alcantara turned down a move to Manchester United in favour of linking up with his former boss Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, it seemed he would have an easy ride into the Champions League winners' midfield.
However, he has not had the start he may have wished, with the former Barcelona manager dishing out a slap round Thiago’s cheeks during their German Super Cup clash with Borussia Dortmund in a repeat of the European showcase last season.
Having just conceded twice in two minutes, Guardiola was far from pleased with his squad, and called them in for a talk when he gave Thiago the wake-up call.
Two goals from Marco Reus along with a Daniel van Buyten own goal and Ilkay Gundogan strike handed Dortmund the match despite two goals from Bayern’s Arjen Robben, and the slap did little to help Thiago as he was at fault for the fourth goal, giving the ball away in the build-up.
The Spanish midfielder left Barcelona in the hunt for first team football, identifying his need to play regularly as the linchpin of his 2014 World Cup hopes. Manchester United were favourites to sign the 22-year-old, but Bayern were quick in signing Thiago once Guardiola had expressed his interest.
Striker Robert Lewandowski also featured for Dortmund, despite both he and the club making it clear in recent weeks that he will be moving to Bayern once his contract expires at the end of the season.
The Bundesliga runners-up gained revenge over Bayern, who beat them to the League title as well as the Champions League and German Cup, with the 4-2 victory to ensure Guardiola’s career in Germany got off to an unsuccessful start.
