Arsenal v Hull City: Arsene Wenger claims his side do not have a mental block when it comes to winning trophies, claiming 'a final is a final'
Gunners have gone nine years without silverware
Wednesday 14 May 2014
Ahead of Saturday's FA Cup final against Hull City, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that his side do not have a mental block when it comes to winning trophies, as they aim to end their nine-year trophy drought.
"This is an opportunity for us to crown our season well," the Frenchman said of his team, who last won a trophy in 2005, when they secured the FA Cup. "We have to come out of the game and know we gave absolutely everything and done the maximum."
The manager added that he has no fears of complacency. In the club's last final, the 2011 League Cup final, they were undone by an 89th-minute Obafemi Martins goal after a mix-up between Laurent Koscielny and Wojciech Szczesny in the 2-1 defeat by Birmingham City.
"I don't believe we need any warning, a final is a final," he said. "It's down to us to perform on the day.
"I don't feel there is any danger of complacency as we've had a hard FA Cup run.
"There's always a huge expectancy. We have played many games under that pressure this season.
"We have to come out of the game and know we gave absolutely everything and done the maximum."
The Gunners limped into the final, defeating Championship side Wigan Athletic in the semi last month, a performance which Wenger has blamed on "low confidence" at the time. They had gone four matches without victory before the game.
"There was nervousness in the semi-final because we had a low level of confidence at the time.
"We were also playing against a team who had beaten Man City and had some great results."
